How to Use DeDup: The Complete Guide to Cleaning Your Android Phone
Your Android phone slows down. Storage fills up. You hit that dreaded "Storage almost full" notification — and you have no idea where the gigabytes went.
DeDup fixes that. It finds every duplicate photo, video, file, and contact on your phone and lets you clear them in a few taps — without uploading anything to the cloud. Here's exactly how to use it.

Grant the Right Permissions
When you open DeDup for the first time, it'll ask for a few permissions. These are required for it to do its job:
- All Files Access — lets DeDup scan your entire storage (not just the gallery) to catch duplicate documents, APKs, and downloads.
- Media permissions — lets DeDup access your photos, videos, and audio files for duplicate detection.
- Notifications — optional, but useful for scan-complete alerts.
Your files never leave your device. Every scan and comparison happens entirely on your phone. DeDup doesn't upload anything to any server.
Step 1 — Scan for Duplicate Photos
Photos are usually the biggest offender. Burst shots, screenshots saved twice, WhatsApp forwards saved to your gallery — they pile up fast.
- Open DeDup and tap Photos.
- Hit Scan. DeDup will fingerprint every image on your device using pixel-level comparison.
- Once the scan completes, you'll see groups of duplicates. Each group shows the images side-by-side so you can compare them before deleting.
- DeDup pre-selects the copies (keeping your best original). Review the selection, then tap Delete Selected.
Tip: Pay special attention to the Near-Duplicates section — these are photos that look almost identical but aren't pixel-perfect matches, like two shots of the same scene taken a second apart.
Step 2 — Remove Duplicate Videos
Videos eat the most storage. Re-downloaded movies, saved reels, multiple quality versions of the same clip — it adds up to gigabytes quickly.
- Tap Videos in the DeDup home screen.
- Tap Scan.
- DeDup detects duplicate video files including different-quality saves of the same video.
- Each duplicate group shows a thumbnail and file size. Tap any video to preview it before deleting.
- Select what to remove and hit Delete.
Step 3 — Clean WhatsApp Media
WhatsApp is the single biggest source of clutter for most users. Forwarded memes, viral videos, sticker packs, group photos — they auto-save and fill your storage silently.
- Tap WhatsApp Cleaner.
- DeDup surfaces all media in your WhatsApp Media folder — grouped by type (images, videos, documents, stickers).
- You'll see exactly how much space each category is using.
- Select the categories you want to clear and tap Delete. Forwarded content you've already seen and don't need is gone in one tap.
Note: DeDup only touches files in your WhatsApp Media folder. Your chat history and messages are completely unaffected.
Step 4 — Clear Screenshots and Receipts
OTP screenshots, delivery confirmations, payment receipts, app notifications you accidentally saved — these pile up invisibly.
- Tap Screenshots & Receipts.
- DeDup automatically identifies screenshots by analysing image content and metadata.
- You'll see them grouped: OTP screens, receipts, notifications, and general screenshots.
- Review and delete what you no longer need.
Step 5 — Clean Your Downloads Folder
Duplicate APKs, files downloaded twice, old install packages — your Downloads folder is often full of junk you forgot about.
- Tap Downloads.
- DeDup scans for re-downloaded files and duplicate APKs.
- You'll see each file with its size and last-modified date.
- Delete what you don't need.
Step 6 — Merge Duplicate Contacts
If you've ever changed phones, switched SIMs, or imported contacts from WhatsApp or Google, you probably have the same person saved three times with different details.
- Tap Contacts.
- DeDup finds contacts that appear multiple times — matched by name, number, or both.
- Each duplicate group shows all the entries side-by-side: which numbers, emails, and accounts each version has.
- Tap Merge to combine them into one clean contact. All numbers and emails are kept — nothing is lost.
Also check: The Blank & Junk Contacts section, which surfaces entries with no name, no number, or only a partial record.
Step 7 — Talk to My Storage (AI Feature)
DeDup includes an on-device AI assistant that lets you ask plain-language questions about your own storage.
Tap the AI tab and ask things like:
- "How much space are my WhatsApp files taking?"
- "Show me all screenshots from last month"
- "Which app has the most duplicate downloads?"
- "Find videos larger than 100MB I haven't opened"
The AI processes everything locally — it has no internet access and never sends your data anywhere.
Tips for Best Results
- Run a full scan first before deleting anything, so you can see the total size savings.
- Use the preview — DeDup always shows you what you're about to delete. Take a second to confirm before bulk-deleting.
- Check Near-Duplicates — this category catches things exact-match scanners miss, like burst shots and lightly edited versions of the same photo.
- Start with WhatsApp — for most users this is where the biggest gains are.
- Don't skip Contacts — junk contacts are easy to overlook but they clutter your dialer and sync unnecessarily.
How Much Space Can You Recover?
It depends on how long you've had the phone and how active you are on WhatsApp. Most users report freeing between 1 GB and 8 GB on their first scan. Power WhatsApp users in large group chats regularly clear 10 GB or more.
